"Thank you so much for the fast shipment of the pedal car. I have been working on it for my grand daughter and it is almost done. Thought I might send a few pics. It does have operating headlights with high and low beam (wiring and switches not installed yet). A true old ford rear view mirror. And will have some other stuff before I send it to her the end of the month. So glad we did business and would recommend you any time."

Here are some updates to our site that I would like to tell you about.

First of all, navigating around the site can be fairly easy, but if you don't know what you're looking for, then we can't help you. That is why, we put our "search" bar on the top left hand corner. Now all you need to do is type in what you want and if we have it, a quick search will reveal where to find it.

Also, one of the most exciting changes we have made to our site is the addition of a new product line that is truly unrelated to pedal cars, but really fascinating just the same. It is our new line of Wooden Ship Model Kits!

There were other minor changes, but finally, one of the more major changes has been that in addition to providing easy access to the search bar, we have split our products out by category and by brand name so that if you do know exactly what you want from our store, it will be easy to find.

Viktor Schreckengost and the Pedal Car!

Schreckengost is known for being a pioneer in industrial design, creating thousands of products since the 1930s including, you guessed it, pedal cars. Almost every American has used one or more of the products he has designed from storage items to items to cool your rooms with.

The Midwest Museum showcased one of the products Schreckengost is famous for, the "Pursuit Pedal Plane," borrowing from one of the largest pedal car collectors in America, David and Denise Sanders of the Pedal Power Museum in Elkhart.

In the 1940s Schreckengost assisted the Murray Company in becoming one of the largest manufacturer of pedal cars, pedal planes and other pedal toy products.

Katharine Lee Reid, Director of The Cleveland Museum of Art, describes Schreckengost as "the last major surviving figure from the first age of industrial design."

The Cleveland Museum of Art shares a little of Viktor Schrekengost's pedal plane history with us:

In the 1940s, Schreckengost's designs for children's pedal cars (as well as bicycles and toys), helped Murray, Ohio become the world's largest manufacturer of pedal cars. His design and ceramic work was interrupted by World War II, when he was recruited by the Navy to develop a system for radar recognition that won him the Secretary of Navy's commendation. After the war, Schreckengost resumed his industrial design career creating products for Murray, Sears, General Electric, Salem China Company, and Harris Printing, among others. Approximately 100 million of his bicycles were manufactured by Murray, making it the largest bicycle-maker in the world. He retired from industrial design in 1972, but continues teaching at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

The Viktor Schreckengost National Centennial Celebration is organized by The Viktor Schreckengost Foundation and Schreckengost Exhibitions in honor of his 100th birthday. Viktor Schreckengost was born on June 26, 1906 in Cleveland, Ohio.

If you don't get to the bottom of the page, one thing I don't want you to miss is the sentence about "Rentar una fantasia" - in English "Rent a Fantasy" - It says:

One company, Grancar, is making a business out of renting these cars to tourists, "Rentar una fantasia." For those with memories of 1957 Chevys when they were new, this company slogan is right on target.

I just came across an adult pedal car article written by Tom Attea, humorist and creator of NewsLaugh.com and learned that Toyota has come up with a way to beat gas prices in its new adult pedal car, "the first car for grownups that is operating like a child's pedal car.

So much news for such little cars - antique pedal cars, that is!

So, do you want to hear more antique pedal car news? It's very true that these little pedal cars are really making a come back in their fame. What was once a bygone era is now a phenomenon - The rise of the antique pedal car.

In Anderson, South Carolina there will be a display of antique pedal cars at the Anderson Convention & Vistors Bureau. Kevin Niehaus of Anderson Independent-Mail featured an article entitled "Pedal to days gone by" and wrote the following:

Visitors to the Anderson Convention & Visitors Bureau may notice something a little different on display at the facility.

The convention bureau has begun to display antique pedal cars from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. The pedal cars are metal toys that children of those decades would ride. Think of an early — really early — Big Wheels, with an extra wheel.

What is so different about these pedal cars that makes them so popular? They are foot powered similar to bicycles. Remember the Flintstones? When they wanted to "start their engines" they would run in place and then zoom off using just their foot strength. Well, pedal cars are propelled like bikes, one foot rotation at a time. This is appealing to parents and children alike, because this is awesome exercise for kids and they love the look of their wheels too. Getting them to exercise is as easy as 1-2-3!

Back to the Anderson County antique pedal display, Niehaus' article continues:

Glenn Brill, executive director of the bureau, said the car displays would be changing every three months.

"We’re going to have six new cars every three months," Mr. Brill said. "Because the owner of the cars, Mike Cannon, has over 150, it will take us more than six years to get through them all."

So, what's in the news? It's the fact that those who are really into collecting classic cars can and have downscaled to a more affordable antique pedal car version of the real thing. However, purchasing an antique pedal car may not be as inexpensive as one may think. The true antique pedal cars can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I found this really great article at Projo.com, written by Peter C.T. Elsworth who shared thoughts from Dave Kleepsies, owner of D & S Pedal Car Restorations in Phoenix, Ariz.:

...restoring a car from the 1920s can double its value, he said. Cars from 1920s and 1930s are particularly valuable, with Packards made by American National Company and Gendron Wheel Co. (which merged in 1927) from the 1920s the premium collectibles. Such cars are practically miniatures of real cars in terms of the level of detail and their surviving numbers can be counted on one hand.

Kleepsies added that pedal cars from this period are also rarer than post-war cars not only because they were made so long ago but because many were scrapped for the war effort during World War II.

How much are such antique pedal cars worth? "I know a gentleman who has three cars and $200,000 invested," he said.

On May 16, 2006, Edsel B. Ford II, great grandson of Henry Ford, supports Juvenille Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) program and Honors the 75th Anniversary of the 1932 Ford Roadster. There will be a production of 10 pedal car versions of this quality car. Safety Tips for Pedal Car Users!

After researching and determining what is important to you as the consumer of pedal cars and other pedal toys, a safety tips page for pedal car users is in order.

Therefore, below is a list of safety tips that have been compiled for you and your children to keep in mind while using your new or old pedal car toys. Please note that while these pedal car safety tips are not exhaustive, following them will add to the enjoyment your children and you experience when using pedal toy products:

Pedal Cars have no automatic breaks so only can be slowed by the direct action of a child's legs. Since this is the case, Pedal Cars should be used only on hard flat surfaces. This means that pedal cars in use should be kept away from any areas where there is an incline or decline in the surface (i.e. hills, sloped driveways and boat ramps).
Remember to avoid pushing the pedal car while your child is riding it since this can cause injury. Your child's legs and feet can only move so fast on the pedals. This safety tip applies to your child's friends too.
Also be sure that your little one is far away from swimming pools, ponds or any open water where he/she could accidentally fall into.
It is IMPERATIVE that your child be constantly supervised while riding a pedal car or any other pedal toy products or ride-on toys, especially when around driveways or other roads where visibility is minimal to adult automobile drivers, since pedal cars are low to the ground. In fact, please ensure that your child does not ride near any traffic.
Loose clothing should not be worn while using a pedal car since pedal cars have exposed pedal mechanisms inside the body of the car where lose clothes could catch. Your child should also have securely fastened shoes on. This includes no loose lacing, again for the same reason.
Some outdoor safety tips are in order as well and can also be applied to playing at any time: (a) While your child is outside make sure to use plenty of sunscreen, at least SPF 15; (b) Before, during and after play, be sure to keep your children hydrated even if they do not feel thirsty; (c) Light colored and light weight clothes are suggested for outside wear (remember not loose); (d) Help children avoid riding their pedal cars where insects, snakes or other animals may be hiding such as flower beds or bushes; (e) It is important to teach your children the importance of proper hand indications for turning and stopping.

Again, this list is not intended to be exhaustive as it is not possible to anticipate every situation that could arise while your children are enjoying their beautiful pedal cars, pedal planes, etc. As parents you are encouraged to use your best judgment, common sense, if you will, while playing with your children or allowing them to play with others.

Walter P. Chrysler Museum's Thoughts on the History of Pedal Cars.

In researching the ins and outs of pedal cars and other pedal toy products, I came across the Walter P. Chrysler Museum website and was fascinated to read a brief pedal car history that I'd like to share with you:

Most pedal car collectibles date since 1945, both because the boom years of production were in the 1950s and 1960s and because World War II scrap drives took a toll on metal toys. Though not as rare, the post-war designs (some of the work of notable industrial designers including automobile industry legends Brooks Stevens and William L. Mitchell) have a charm all their own.

The pedal car era began almost as soon as the world embraced the automobile and ended when metal toys gave way to plastic. Reaching the peak of popularity in the late 1920s and early 1930s, pedal cars experienced a resurgence in the '50s - '60s with chain-drive models. No pedal cars were produced in the mid-1940s when all metal production was directed to the World War II effort.
Many of the early pedal cars were patterned after designs by the Big Three automakers. With many families reeling from the financial devastation of The Great Depression, pedal cars were often toys for upper class children.

By the early 1970s, those who went without as youngsters began collecting the miniature vintage vehicles at private shows and antique retailers. The Internet revolution has benefited collectors by making pedal cars more easily accessible and reducing the costs, though rare models have been listed as high as $16,000.

So now you have a better understanding of where pedal cars came from and the value associated with them, especially the antique models.

I was looking over at Celebrity Baby Blog and found out this about Tom and Katie's little Suri:

As is her custom, Ellen gifted Tom and Kate/Katie with a pram. Because of Tom's love of flying and his "Kiss Me Kate" plane, Ellen gave them a pink airplane pram (that was really a ride-on Fantasy Flyer airplane with a hood) and a black satin flight suit and sunglasses with her name embroidered on it. (...below is the plane that they customized by adding extensions to the wheel legs and stenciling Suri's name on the side).

Pedal Car and Pedal Toy History!

In the 1920's and 1930's the wealthy were catered to when it came to buying pedal cars since they were the primary buyers. The five well known manufacturers of pedal car products were American National Gendron, Steelcraft, Garton and Toledo Wheel, according to UKPedalCarCompany.com.

However, did you know that the development of pedal cars goes way back to the 1890s? Yes, although the wealthy were able to purchase the top of the line, basic homemade models were used by those not as fortunate.

Later pedal toy manufactureres recognized that there was an absolute wonderful market for these products and so extended their business strategies to include manufacturing of other pedal toy products like pedal planes named the Red Baron, Shark Attack and Fantasy Flyer.

Also manufactured were pedal motorcycles, trucks, trikes and even die cast models for those who just wanted a model of the models.
